Murat Aktas Trainee broker, Dry cargo

Murat Aktas

Trainee broker, Dry cargo

I joined Clarksons as an intern and later started to work here as a trainee broker in the Dry Cargo Department on the Handy Desk.

Clarksons is the biggest shipping services company in the world - the most successful one as well. The fact that there are so many offices globally also attracted me; being a Turkish citizen living in the UK, I find the chance to gain experience in other overseas offices very exciting.

Working for Clarksons you need to be aggressive in your will to learn. Being able to focus at all times and handle many tasks at once is crucial, as is learning to understand and analyse information correctly. Getting along with people is also very important as you have to work as part of a team.

If you are new to shipping you will experience a different type of market and a whole new terminology, and there will still be things that you don't know at the end of the six months probation period. Other than that, you will basically face the same challenges that any trainee would in any other company but here, if you want responsibility you are given it. You need to work hard, occasionally put in long hours, concentrate, adapt to the desk you are working with and learn quickly.

Having the world's best brokers around you is a great opportunity. Typically they are very busy, but you learn when to ask questions and, more importantly, which questions to ask and they will always help. When they get to know you, if they think you really want this job and that you're doing your best, then they'll start helping you even before you ask questions. It is vital to gain as much as possible from their priceless experience.

Join Clarksons if you are seeking a job where you can be active and creative. You will love the benefits and the job itself, which keeps you awake without the need for coffee.
